Small Groups:
The Heartbeat of Destiny
We want you to feel welcome. That’s why we present
an opportunity for every Destiny member to become a part of a
Small Group. The goal of Small Groups is to demonstrate
the character and compassion of Jesus Christ in an intimate environment. Jesus
said that people would know his disciples by the love they have
for one another. By joining a Small Group, you become a
part of a family who is there to help you when you need someone
to walk beside you or just be there for you. In a Small Group
environment, you will feel the same sense of love that you feel
when you come to our church.

Small Group FAQs
1. Who leads my Small Group?
Small Group Hosts coordinate the meetings for the group. They
should have a desire to learn from the Bible and exhibit a God-honoring
lifestyle.
2. What is the length of service for a Small
Group Host?
We ask Small Group Hosts to commit to three months or one
curriculum series. The hosting responsibility then rotates
with the group.
3. What type of training is involved?
Small Group Hosts undergo a preliminary training session that
lasts approximately two hours. In this session, a host
is acclimated to the processes and terminology of Small Groups. After
this session, Small Group Hosts are guided in leadership by their
Shepherd Coaches. They also attend quarterly training sessions.
4. How will my group be formed?
During a Connection Party, Small Groups are typically formed
as persons in a large group are directed to make a series of
connections. First, a person finds a partner. Then those
partners find another group of two. This continues until
a group of six or more people is formed.
5. Where will the group meet?
Locations of Small Group meetings are decided upon by the group.
6. What are typical reasons for declining a
person interested in leading a Small Group?
Those being interviewed to become Small Group Leaders may be
declined the position due to having lifestyle practices that
Destiny would not want to be reproduced. Sexual activity
in single adults and social drinking are two of the most common
reasons for declining potential leaders. Having overcommitted
schedules is the third most frequent reason that people are declined
the opportunity to become a Small Group Leader.
7. What exactly happens at a Small Group meeting?
A Small Group meeting can be either fellowship-driven or curriculum-driven. In
general, Small Group meetings should provide a time for worship,
fellowship, evangelism, discipleship and ministry. Fellowship-driven
meetings have a flexible agenda. Curriculum-driven meetings
are guided by lesson plans that are given to or prepared by the
facilitator of the lesson. The common threads in the two
formats are prayer requests and praise reports.
8. Do I have to be a member of Destiny to be
in a Small Group?
No. You do not have to be a member of Destiny to be in a Small
Group. However, in order to lead a Small Group, you do
have to be a member of Destiny by completing CLASS
101.
9. Is there a certain curriculum that I follow?
Small Groups have opportunities to choose affinity-based curricula. However,
there will be opportunities for all groups to simultaneously
study the same curricula.
10. Do I report to anybody?
Small Group Hosts give monthly reports to their Shepherd Coach.
11. What is the minimum or maximum number of
people that can be in a Small Group?
We encourage Small Groups with five or fewer people to go to
Connection Parties to attract new members. If a group consistently
has 12 or more members we encourage them to multiply by becoming
two groups of six people.
12. How long does the average Small Group meeting
last?
A Small Group meeting lasts a minimum of 90 minutes.
13. Can a Small Group ever have too many members?
When a Small Group has 12 or more members we encourage them
to multiply and form new Small Groups.
14. How are Small Group curricula chosen?
A church-wide curriculum may be commissioned by our Senior Pastor
or conceived of by the Small Groups Leadership Team. Affinity-based
curricula are chosen by the Small Group Leader, usually by consensus
of the Small Group members.
15. When should my group meet?
Small Groups meet twice a month.
16. How should our group handle childcare?
Small Groups handle childcare differently. Some Small Groups
pay a childcare worker to come to meetings to care for children. Other
Small Groups make a point to design meetings that will include
their children.
17. What is a Small Group Liaison?
A Host Liaison is a host of a small group that desires leadership
within the group. To become a Host Liaison, one must be
interviewed and affirmed. Host Liaisons must demonstrate
a Godly lifestyle that is above reproach in all settings, interactions
and relationships.
